To the east of the Coral Sea is the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean and the South Pacific Islands of Vanuatu, New Caledonia and the Solomon Island. In the north is the Louisiade Archipelago and Papua New Guinea and then west across to the Torres Strait north of Cape York. The waters of Tasman Sea extends south.
The eastern parts of the sea are prone to earthquakes and tsunamis. The warm waters of the Coral Sea usually produce a couple of tropical lows and cyclones each year.
The Coral Sea is named for its primary feature, the Great Barrier Reef, which is the largest coral reef in the world.
